The Gallery below shows the Horse Rescue Australia Herd, currently residing at our acreage in Richmond NSW. Please review their Bios. If you would like to make any enquiry about any of them, please click the Sponsor / Adopt buttons in the bio.
Angus is a Standardbred gelding who was found wandering the streets of nearby Riverstone. A concerned neighbour managed to catch him and took him into care. They notified Blacktown Animal Rehoming Centre, who tried to find Angus’ owner with no luck. Horse Rescue Australia was contacted and we agreed to take him in. He’s a nice friendly fellow, who has settled in well. Angus is available for sponsorship and adoption.
Becky came to us after being seized by Animal Welfare League. She was pregnant but we didn’t know when she was due. Early one September morning (just before the NRL grand final) we came out to feed everyone and discovered her sweet little baby boy had been born.. who we named Nathan (Cleary!!) Becky came to us with lots of trouble with her feet and we’re working on getting them right. Because of this, she is available for sponsorship only.
Bodhi is an aged Welsh pony who came to us after being abandoned in a paddock. He’s a very sweet little thing and was adopted to a lovely family with his friend Apache. Unfortunately his new family ended up having a change of circumstances so we’ve welcomed him back to the herd. (We always take our horses back.) Bodhi is currently on a trial adoption.
Bruadar is a 22-year-old ex-racehorse who came to us with his companion Elsa after their owner passed away. He arrived here a little on the light side but is eagerly eating his way to a healthy weight! If you would like to contribute to Bruadar’s ongoing health journey he is available for sponsorship.
Celeste is a quarter horse X arab mare in her mid 20s. She came to us from the Central Coast, where she was bred by her owner, who kept her as a companion horse for her other horses. She’s quite nervous, but enjoys the company of other horses. Celeste is available for adoption to the right person looking for a companion horse with minimal handling.
Chance has been with us since June 2018. He’s the main man in the main herd and our one-eyed pirate after an injury resulted in the loss of his left eye. But he only has eyes for his girlfriend Pep – they are the love story in the herd. Chance is available for sponsorship, but we would consider adoption into the right family.
Duke is an aged black Friesian gelding who arrived in early 2026 with his friends Olivia and Quinn. They came to us through the Animal Welfare League after being abandoned in a paddock. They are a tight-knit trio who are slowly settling in, but are still a bit wary of us. We know nothing more about them at this stage. Duke is available for sponsorship only.
Eddy was surrendered to us with his two close mates Ozzy and Iggy by an elderly gentleman who has gone into care. He’s a small, inquisitive, pony in his teens. Eddy is only available for sponsorship at this stage.
Elsa is an elderly mare who arrived with her best friend ex-racehorse Bruadar after their owner passed away. She’s a lovely, gentle girl and is settling in well. Elsa is available for sponsorship only at this stage.
Gypsy was left behind at a property near Camden. She doesn’t appear to have had much handling and is quite nervous around people. Now that she’s at the sanctuary with good food and kindness, we’re sure she’ll work out that life isn’t so bad. Gypsy is available for sponsorship only at this stage.
Hughie is everybody’s favourite cos he’s just so darn cute. He is the most gorgeous little shaggy boy and we think he’s in his mid to late 20s. Our resident escape artist, you’ll often find him wandering around just doing his thing, like… ‘what do you mean I should stay in my yard?’ Hughie has Cushings Disease which requires daily oral medication. He is available for adoption (you’ll need plenty of chicken wire!) or sponsorship.
Iggy was surrendered to us with his two close mates Ozzy and Eddy by an elderly gentleman who has gone into care. He’s a small, gentle, pony in his teens. Iggy is only available for sponsorship at this stage.
Jonny arrived May 2020 and is now in his mid teens. He’s a timid boy and has had minimal handling. He’s available for adoption to the right person who is willing to be patient. He would make a nice companion pony.
Lola is a thoroughbred mare (unraced) in her mid teens. She is borderline Cushings, but not on medication. She can be pushy and would possibly need a trainer to help improve her manners. She quickly forms attachments to other horses and would make a good companion horse.
Luna arrived in November 2021 after being abandoned at an agistment property. We think she’s about 20 years old. She’s a feisty little thing and is always trying to boss her bigger herd mates around. She is good mates with Vonnie. Luna is available for sponsorship and adoption.
Mumma to cute little Loki, Maeve came to the sanctuary with a group of four after they were abandoned in a paddock in Cecil Hills. Generous roadworkers were feeding them for a while until the Animal Welfare League became involved and contacted us. Maeve doesn’t come across as super friendly, but once caught she is quite calm and happy to have snacks. Maeve is available for sponsorship only at this stage.
Little Nathan was the first foal born at the sanctuary – just before the 2025 NRL Grand Final so of course his name had to be Nathan (Cleary!!) This cute and funny boy is just so cheeky, we love him to bits. Uncle Hughie has been very protective of him and he’s getting so brave and bold, learning how to be a big-boy-pony. Nathan is available for sponsorship, or adoption to the right home.
This adorable gentleman joined us in November 2022. Ned is a standardbred in his early 30s. He isn’t with the main herd because he gets bullied and needs time to eat his meals. However, he shares a paddock with some of the littlies, puts up with their nonsense and then sternly says No More!! Watch them run. He was surrendered to us due to his elderly owner’s ill health. Ned is available for sponsorship and adoption
Olivia is a dark bay Arab mare who arrived in early 2026 with her friends Quinn and Duke. They came to us through the Animal Welfare League after being abandoned in a paddock. They are a tight-knit trio who are slowly settling in, but are still a bit wary of us. We know nothing more about them at this stage. Olivia has an old tendon injury which we monitor. She is available for sponsorship and adoption.
Ozzy was surrendered to us with his two close mates Iggy and Eddy by an elderly gentleman who has gone into care. He’s a small pony in his teens with a big personality. Ozzy is only available for sponsorship at this stage.
Pep is a thoroughbred mare born in 2013. She was rescued from a drought-stricken property and came to the sanctuary in 2019. She’s the alpha female in the herd, but manages her position in a very ladylike way. She’s completely besotted with Chance and they can often be found nibbling each other’s backs. Pep is available for sponsorship and adoption.
Quinn is a chestnut thoroughbred gelding who arrived in early 2026 with his friends Olivia and Duke. They came to us through the Animal Welfare League after being abandoned in a paddock. They are a tight-knit trio who are slowly settling in, but are still a bit wary of us. We know nothing more about them at this stage. Quinn is available for sponsorship only.
Rosie is an appaloosa pony mare in her late teens. She came to HRA from Cobbitty. She has Cushings disease and is on daily medication. She is affected by any changes at the sanctuary and needs to see what’s going on. She is available for sponsorship and adoption.
Vonnie arrived at the sanctuary with her friend Ygritte. Neither had been handled all that much and were quite nervous, but settled in very well and really enjoyed the regular feed schedule. Vonnie is a lovely girl and is available for sponsorship or adoption.
Ygritte is an Arab mare in her late 20s. She came to us with her friend Vonnie and hadn’t been handled much in the past so she was quite stand-offish. She was so thin and ribby when she arrived but filled out nicely after being part of a regular feed schedule. (Although we do have to feed her separately so the other girls don’t boss her around and steal her food.) Ygritte is available for sponsorship, or adoption to the right family.
